Grab your paintbrushes and dust off that easel, Mahunga artist Sandi Hickey is taking over Lysnar House for a day-long course, and passing on the secrets of still life drawing.

Still life involves close and careful observation of a single object or group, often in domestic or simple interior settings.

It is a genre that goes back to ancient Rome when artists often worked in fresco on plaster walls or mosaic images. Still life has become an international staple of art ever since.

Hickey is offering an introduction for beginners or a refresher for experienced artists.

She will be covering an understanding of still life's principles and elements, such as understanding positive and negative shapes, the use of space, shadow and light to create tonal values and attention to detail.

Hickey has a breadth of experience in a variety of media and styles. Those talents have been recognised in galleries around New Zealand and Australia.

Information and samples of Hickey's work are available on Facebook under Gisborne Artists' Society.
