A pianist, a clarinettist, and two bassoonists will perform in the last of the Tiromoana concert series for the year on Sunday at arts patron Professor Jack Richards’ Wainui Beach home.

Seventeen-year old Lixin Zhang is in Burnside High School’s specialist music programme in which he plays piano and violin. This year he recorded a CD with Rattle Records, and has made concerto appearances with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and the Bach Musica Orchestra.

Long Nguyen is one of the new generation of Vietnamese classical musicians who have forged international careers. In demand as a soloist and chamber musician, he has premiered pieces written for him by composers Gao Ping and Ben Hoadley, both of which were commissioned by Professor Richards. Having gained recognition as one of Australia’s most prominent young clarinettists Oliver Schermacher has played with orchestras across Australia, New Zealand, Europe and China. He has also played historical clarinet and chalumeau (single-reed woodwind instrument of the late baroque era) with early-music ensembles. Schermacher has also produced comedic videos for social media page, The Clari Boys.

Commissioner, composer, performer Ben Hoadley draws inspiration from the natural world and from the visual arts. He has worked as a freelance bassoonist with most of the professional orchestras in Australasia, including contracts as guest principal bassoon in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra.

Lixin Zhang (piano), Long Nguyen (bassoon), Oliver Schermacher (clarinet) with a special appearance by composer/bassoonist Ben Hoadley perform at Tiromoana, 41 Winifred Street, on Sunday at 2.30pm. Adults $25, students/children free. To book seats call 863 0027 or 021 140 5069.
