ORO WAI ORA: Musician Matiu Bartlett will play a range of puoro, traditional Maori instruments to complement the Water is Life, He ora te wai, exhibition at Tairawhiti Museum next Thursday.
MATIU Bartlett became interested in puoro in 2003 and by 2012 he was playing and composing music for the instruments as well as making them. He has since been performing, presenting and running workshops involving all aspects of puoro.
Bartlett sources materials to make the taonga from the bush of
the Ruakituri Valley and the shores and rivers of Kahungungu. He is working towards showcasing his work globally to increase awareness of contemporary and traditional Maori music and taonga puoro.
