Ocean health focus of mural project

SEA WALL: Gisborne woman Trish Brown adds the final touches to her sea-themed mural on a wall in Stanley Road. Brown is one of a number of Gisborne artists who will join international and national artists when they come here next month for Sea Walls: Artists for Oceans, a global art project.

International and national artists will flood into Gisborne next month for a mass mural project that focuses on ocean health.

The internationals — yet to be named — are taking part in Sea Walls: Artists for Oceans and are from Switzerland, Australia, USA, South Africa, Mexico and Hawaii,.

National artists are from Auckland, Whanganui, Napier and Wellington.

Gisborne artists Leah McCann, Nick Tupara, Erena Koopu, graduate artists from Toihoukura; Trish Brown and Rhi Gardener will also take part. Brown and Gardener will collaborate on a piece at Waikanae Beach TOP 10 Holiday Park.

Sea Walls is Hawaii-based organisation PangeaSeed Foundation’s not-for-profit, public art programme that takes the message of ocean conservation into streets around the globe.

As regional project coordinator for Sea Walls: Artists for Oceans, freelance illustrator, artist and designer Kelly Spencer has returned to her home town to locate mural sites and co-ordinate the event.
