FLIGHT INTO THE ABSURD: Comedian Rhys Darby is bringing his show Mystic Time Bird to Gisborne. Picture supplied
POSSIBLY shagged out following a prolonged squawk like the Norwegian Blue in Monty Python’s parrot sketch, Mystic Time Bird comedian Rhys Darby needs to preserve his voice, which means he is not available for an interview. So we’re going to have to wing it.
Soon to alight on the War
Memorial Theatre stage, Darby’s show Mystic Time Bird had an appropriately out-of-left-field inspiration. Darby hit an existential wall during filming for Jumanji in Hawaii. He was so overwhelmed with everything happening in his life that he went to see a mystic in the forest.
“He told me, in a previous life, I was a bird,” Darby told presenters on TV3 morning show The Cafe.
“I started having freaky dreams. This is what this comedy show is all about.”
Although he will only reveal what sort of bird he was in the show, Darby is no stranger to the ornithological. Flight Of The Conchords, Thunderbirds Are Go, Love Birds and Peacock Season are some of the avian-related shows the comedian has been involved with.
