Jack Marshall’s letter last week in the the Gisborne Herald (Wednesday March 11) advocating a sauna in the Kiwa Pools redevelopment made very good sense.

I was disappointed that there were none in the building of Kiwa Pools.

I moved up from Napier and miss the sauna at Ocean Spa on Marine Parade.

Both the Ocean Spa and the Onekawa Pools have spa pools, which are very popular and a drawcard to clients who cannot afford saunas and spa pools at home, as well as to out-of-town tourists.

Spa pools are popular and feature quite a lot at public pools, not only in cities larger than Gisborne but also at smaller towns such as Mount Maunganui and Cambridge – and I also found two at the Whakatāne Aquatic Centre a few months ago.

Let us hope that some of the $6.5 million about to be spent goes, as Jack Marshall suggests, on older people with achy bones and athletes with tired muscles.

The survey, as he points out, prioritises swimmers and children, but those doing the planning for the redevelopment are very likely going to be elderly in the future and will be very grateful for the public sauna and spa pools, if installed, and that Gisborne can be like other cities in New Zealand.
