Good mate Toogood to open for The D4

Hard-rock band The D4 will close out their nationwide tour in “rock and roll mother f***ing” style, when they play at Gisborne’s Smash Palace on Saturday night.

After a 10-year hiatus, the internationally-acclaimed Auckland rock and rollers went back on the road last month.

For their final show, they will have legendary Shihad frontman Jon Toogood join them.

Toogood will lay down his solo acoustic set before The D4 rock out in Gizzy.

Also featuring is local band Sit Down in Front, who will play before the Shihad rocker.

“They are an exciting young band. They are 14 and 15 year olds, who have a great punky sound,” says Smash Palace publican Darryl Monteith.

“It will be a great opportunity for them to play in front of some of their idols.”

The D4 to reunite with The DatsunsBefore The D4 get to the East Coast, they will reunite with old buddies and fellow Kiwi garage-rockers — also of international acclaim — The Datsuns.

The D4 and The Datsuns play in Wellington tonight and in Napier tomorrow.

The D4 first exploded on to the music scene in the late 1990s and have played some legendary shows in the past — including international tours in Australia, Japan, the UK, Europe, and on the Late Show with David Letterman.

They created a storm back in 2002 when they sold truckloads of their Rock and Roll Motherf***er tshirts while en route to the UK.

Plus, there was that infamous gig at The Kings Arms in Auckland when the PA system caught fire and the band carried on playing.

Luckily there was no repeat of that when the boys played there last month.

Their return to The Kings Arms was somewhat of a tribute as the iconic venue makes its final curtain call next month.

The D4’s trail for this recent tour has so far seen them play in Raglan, Christchurch, Hamilton and Helensville as well the Auckland City Limit’s Festival – which featured a stellar line-up including Grace Jones.

But playing in Gizzy’s industrial area, next to an old DC3 plane, with their good mate Jon Toogood, seems like the ultimate way for the garage-rock band to wrap up their welcome-back tour.
