Poised with notepad and sensible parka (it looked like rain) at the edge of the Rhythm and Vines moshpit two seasons ago a reporter won the approval of one festival-goer. The party person stopped in his tracks, clapped the scribe on his shoulder and said “good on ya, old fullah”.

I — no I mean the reporter fullah — nearly packed up his thermos and sammies and strode off the paddock. Except he was taken aback to see moments later the glitter-dusted crowd mustered in the mosh pit heave, bounce and wave their arms in the air like they just didn’t care to a recording of Dave Dobbyn’s cheesiest hit, Loyal.

And they weren’t even being ironic, the reporter told whoever would listen later. Now the cross-generational crowd-pleaser with his Kiwi songbook is to return for the first time since 2015.

Another name — also sure to be familiar to Gisborne/East Coast mums and dads — is this year’s headline act Playboi Carti. Described as one of the new school Atlanta favourites, Carti’s Magnolia broke through as one of the biggest rap records of 2017.

Since then he’s released his second album Die Lit which received both critical and commercial success. Performing live the young artist is said to bring his high energy set every time he takes the stage.
