The 5+ A Day Charitable Trust was formed in 2007 for the benefit of the general public and specifically the children of New Zealand.

The trust is committed to increasing the consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables for better health in all New Zealanders.

For optimal health we should all eat at least five servings of fresh fruit and vegetables every day. Specifically we should eat two servings of fruit and three or more of vegetables each day.

The organisation promotes healthy lifestyles. Just like a car needs the right fuel to run well, we need fresh fruit and vegetables to get the best out of our bodies for physical activity, learning, sport and all our daily activities.

This is in line with our Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation’s recommendations.

A serving is about a handful and we all use our own hands — therefore a child’s serving is smaller than an adult’s.

5+ A Day focuses on education. Curriculum-linked resources promoting awareness, understanding and knowledge of the importance of eating 5+ A Day are produced and distributed free to educators and health professionals via the education website: and consumer website:
