Those in possesion of a DVD of the 2016 ExNE, the inaugural East by North-East showcase of local music, know they have in their hands a collector’s item, a taonga, so highly sought after that in the not-too-distant future its sale at a Sotheby’s auction house will see them through
their golden years. Darryl Monteith, the mover and shaker behind ExNE is about to premiere in a red carpet event at Smash Palace the technologically advanced 2018 ExNE recording. Nine Gisborne and East Coast acts make up the fourth ExNE recording. The screening on May 30 comprises new music from Loop Theorem, Dion Whaanga, Kings of Kaiaua, The Search, The Pines, Lazy Fifty, Uni-Fi, Ter3ign and Killing Floor.
Monteith looks back at the 2016 DVD with nostalgia; even avuncular bemusement when he considers the vector the 2018 audio and video production has taken since. This time he took production in a new, collaborative direction.
This project was about sharing and getting more people involved.
“In previous years I’ve done the audio production and mixing and Josh O’Neill took care of the video. I was being selfish, having fun and learning a lot — so this year we branched out with a group of 20 technicians on post-production.”
