TENNESSEE bluegrass with soul and a backbeat of funk hits Wairoa and Tokomaru Bay next week when indie-folk act The Danberrys head this way as part of their off-the-beaten-track tour of New Zealand.
Joined by Vanessa McGowan of Tattletale Saints on upright bass, Dorothy Daniel and husband Ben DeBerry bring
songs described as rich in pastoral imagery, about overcoming demons, being washed clean and starting anew.
DeBerry got his new guitar just in time for the band’s New Zealand tour. The guitar is partly made of moon spruce, trees that grow in the Austrian mountains.
“They fell them in conjunction with the moon cycles so it’s very mystical,” DeBerry told Radio New Zealand.
“They fell them in the middle of the night and they leave them where they fell in the forest for a whole year then they come back and chop them up.”
