Gisborne Centre Stage’s latest musical production Jersey Boys is now open for auditions this Friday and Saturday.

With phenomenal music, memorable characters, and great storytelling, the musical follows the fascinating evolution of four blue-collar kids who became one of the greatest successes in pop-music history.

Debutant director Danielle Siata said she was “excited” to direct the much-loved musical.

Her roots run deep into theatre as her grandmother Maureen Potroz was the founding member of the Gisborne Centre Stage Theatre years ago.

“I have been part of the Centre Stage Theatre for about 20 years now. I’ve played a number of roles over the years and wanted to try something different this time.

“So I thought ‘why not direction’,” she said.

For the audition, the director said she would ideally want 18 actors in total. However, based on the quality and number of auditions, actors might be asked to play double roles.

One of the key criteria to get selected for the musical was having a strong vocal ability – at least for the four key characters and some supporting roles.

Siata said there would be two separate auditions.

Friday auditions are for the ensemble group or support characters; locals who are interested in singing and dancing should come for the 7pm auditions, while  those who want to take up dancing should attend the auditions at 7.30pm.

Saturday auditions are for individuals who either want to play the key roles or other supporting-actor roles.

“You should be prepared to sing a song of your choice, a rock’n’ roll, doo wop or pop song in the style of the show, which best displays your vocal ability,” she said.

Video submissions are also acceptable for those who can’t make the audition weekend.

Jersey Boys is a winner of Best Musical at both the Tony Awards and Olivier Awards.

Jersey Boys takes you behind the music of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons to discover the secret of a 40-year friendship as the foursome work their way from the streets of New Jersey to the heights of stardom.

Chart-topping hits include Sherry, Big Girls Don’t Cry, Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, Dawn, and My Eyes Adored You, which brought The Four Seasons the highest honour: induction into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame.
