FESTIVAL IN FLIGHT: Kites, kai, waiata and waka will be part of Te Tairawhiti Arts Festival’s free, family-friendly Manu Aute Kite Day — and you could be part of the entertainment. Meanwhile, auditions are soon to be held for a script-in-hand performance of American playwright Robert O’Hara’s Barbecue, an exploration of race and family dynamics. Pictures supplied

The search is on for performers and art makers to take part in Te Tairawhiti Arts Festival events such as Maui Putahi, producer/performer Teina Moetara’s opening experience, and Manu Aute Kite Day.

Festival organisers are looking for actors, buskers, clowns, circus performers, musicians, dancers, kapa haka practitioners, face painters and art makers of all ages and backgrounds to be part of these events.

If you’re interested in performing in Te Tairawhiti Arts Festival, organisers are keen to hear from you. Register your interest by Monday, September 9 by sending a video clip of a performance or a brief description of your act to info@tetairawhitiartsfestival.nz. Or pop in and have a chat with festival director Tama Waipara, Manu Aute Kite Day line producer Mere Boynton or Maui Putahi producer Teina Moetara. Just email first to make a time.

On the grillThe arts festival also invites actors to audition for script-in-hand performance at Smash Palace of Barbecue. American playwright Robert O’Hara’s exploration of race and family dynamics. A Windy City Times review of the play describes the plot.

“Five adult siblings with substance-abuse issues gather for a barbecue, which is cover for a family intervention for Barbara, the out-of-control crackhead sister nicknamed ‘Zippety-Boom’ for her violent moods.

“In fact, there are two sets of siblings identical in every way—names, substance issues, costumes, attitudes—except one set is white and the other is black. They appear in alternating scenes presenting a single, continuing story. Both sib sets are comically vulgar and blue-collar, and equally lampooned by playwright Robert O’Hara, a skilled satirist.”

Actors in the Tairawhiti Arts festival production will have the opportunity to work with director/actor, Anapela Polataivao (Wild Dogs Under My Skirt, Pani and Pani, Game of Bros).

Organisers are looking for actors in their 30s to 50s. Those interested must be available for an audition on Sunday, September 8 and for the rehearsed reading on Saturday, October 19.
