Hauraki Mayor John Tregidga met with locals in Whiritoa, as they band together after being hit with 260mm of rain in the past 24 hours. Made with funding from NZ On Air.

Locals in Whiritoa are holding fast after 260mm of rain pelted the Coromandel Peninsula.

"The roads are pretty rough, but the people here are resilient and we've been here before, done that."

Hauraki District Mayor John Tregidga arrived at the beachfront town with food and water - meeting with locals to assess the situation.

"The only worry or concern I have from now, really, is the second lot of weather that's coming down."

About twenty people were present at the Whiritoa Surf Life Saving Club. Locals say they haven't seen anything as bad as this.

"When we got the call yesterday morning, I walked out of the front bi-fold doors, over the deck, onto the steps and just about got washed away."

Mayor Tregidga says the council is aware of issues that need to be addressed.

"But we do have those drainage issues, and we have had those for a time. Every time we have heavy rain, the property goes under but not the actual housing."

In the meantime, everyone is working together to get through the next two days as more rain is expected to hit overnight.
