Anyone who loves harmony is going to be buzzing this weekend when top barbershop groups gather to raise the roof for Alzheimers Tauranga.
Local barbershop chorus Harmony-a-Plenty is organising the fundraiser, and is supported by top groups City of Sails Harmony, from Auckland, Mighty River Open Chorus, from the Waikato, as well as KeyNote Ladies Barbershop Chorus from Tauranga.
"They are some of the top choruses in the country and are just phenomenal," says organiser, Denys Moss.
In the past, barbershop music may have been regarded as old-fashioned, but Mr Moss says young people have picked up the baton for harmony in a big way. "It's wonderful. At the last convention we had over 1000 young people and New Zealand now has a world class reputation, due to the fact that the Musical Island Boys won a gold medal as the top group in the world recently."
"It was the musical equivalent of winning the world cup. We also have another young group, Vocal Effects, doing well overseas."
