Tauranga Boys'

Football:

First XI v Cambridge (won 2-0). Tauranga Boys' faced a strong Cambridge Mens Fed 2 side on Saturday. It was a rainy day and the game started out at a high pace. Missed chances at Tauranga Boys' end of the pitch saw Cambridge heads rise as they thought they had a chance to sneak some points. The football that Tauranga Boys' played was outstanding but when it came to the attacking third they did not capitalise on the chances that were presented. Halftime approached and neither team could break the deadlock. Cambridge came out firing in the second-half and brought more physicality to the game. A bit too much aggression on their behalf saw them get one yellow and one red card early on in the second half, which put them down to 10 men on the pitch. Tauranga Boys' dominated most of the possession and were presented with a few more chances. Finally, Dylan Morris scored from a good corner kick by Jared Bailey. The game started to settle from then on and Tauranga Boys' College had long passages where they kept the ball. Robbie Parekowhai-Gudex charged down the field with the ball and put in Dylan Bull with a chance on goal, a good save from the keeper saw Dylan Morris get the rebound and put the ball into the back of the net. 2-0 was the final score. It was a pleasing result for Tauranga Boys' College. By Dylan Morris (Y10)

Rugby:

First XV v Rotorua Boys' High School Won 31-26. Tauranga Boys' have finally broken the Rotorua curse with a well-deserved 31-26 victory. Rotorua threw away their home advantage by having their Number 8 red carded, for kicking, early in the match. Dan Hollinshead, on the receiving end of the violent act, controlled the match superbly with towering kicks and electric running throughout the match. TBC dominated most of the match with another outstanding forward display and Rotorua were unable to stop the momentum created by Aiden Ross and Leighton Hika around the fringes. Amazingly all tries were scored by the tight five giving the side the maximum points for their opening Super 8 match. TBC were perhaps guilty of allowing Rotorua Boys' to stay in the match with several defensive lapses but the early exchanges were won with ferocious tackling led by Connor Silvester, Max Schroder and Grayson Kite. Ben Webby and Schroder dominated the lineout and stole several balls and this allowed wingers Wemin Kapia and Christian Kelly to make several telling breaks from turnover possession. Kelly in particular made several scything runs and was stopped short by some outstanding scrambling defence from Rotorua. However, this only allowed the TBC forward pack to regain the ball and score from the close quarter contest. Rotorua were threatening out wide and broke the Tauranga defensive line several times and this was only stopped by some courageous defence by Connor Fifita and Kapia. Overall Tauranga maintained control of the match and it was a rare blunder from the lineout in the final play of the game that allowed Rotorua to score a consolation try and earn a bonus point from the match. The side would also like to acknowledge the supporters and several old boys that were present on the sideline. Love your work.

Te Puke High

Futsal

Last Friday we had a junior and a senior team represent TPHS at the BOP Secondary Schools Futsal champs. Futsal is a new form of indoor football which has been very popular amongst our students. Our junior team played three very close games and were unfortunate to narrowly lose all three. Stand out players were Lauchy Murray, Daniel Bowler, Nicholas Spedding and Jake Wichers. The senior boys made the semifinals where they faced Tauranga Boys, losing 4-3. They then played Otumoetai College for the 3rd/4th playoff. Jonas Eyskens, Philipp Walter and Buck Tapuke displayed some exceptional skills and agility to win the game 6-4, taking out 3rd place overall.

Football

The girls' 1st XI played Mt College with another impressive display last Saturday. Strong defence from the backs and accurate passing from the midfielders meant Te Puke took control of the game, giving their forwards the opportunity to strike for goal. Tegan Ashton scored four goals, Muna Limbu, Ella Litchfield-Harrison, Rachel Schultz (2), Jada Schindler-Thompson, Casey Williams and Jessie McIndoe each scoring one. Final score 10-1.

The boys' 1st XI beat Otumoetai College City 8-3. Last Saturday saw the first of our competition games get under way with the Junior A Boys facing off against TBC Denmark. The match proved to be an intense battle between two evenly matched sides. Te Puke's Kelly Toko scored the first goal just before halftime. The second half was just as nail-biting with TBC scoring twice against lapses in Te Puke's defence. The boys came back with a beautiful shot from Kokiri Reeder Rota. With the scores tied for a good part of the second half TBC got the winning shot. Final score 3-2. With only one sub available the boys did a great job fighting to the end, signs of an exciting season ahead. The Junior B played against TBC France at Pemberton Park losing 4-0, although the score board didn't reflect the boys' courageous efforts.

Only 1 home game this weekend for the Junior B team who come up against TBC Germany, Litt Park 2 at 10:30am.

Rugby

The Under 15's played against Taupo Nui A Tia. Coming off the back of consecutive losses, the boys were eager to get a win under their belt though Taupo weren't about to be walked over. Some great attacking saw Te Puke leading most of the game but a well worked try in the corner saw Taupo level the scores in the final play, missing the conversion from the corner to win the game. Final score 36-36.

The 2nd XV played Trident High School down in Whakatane, losing in a tough game 43-7. An injury-struck 1st XV side played Rotorua Lakes High at home last Saturday. The boys showed great depth and determination to secure a 33-0 win and earn promotion into division 2, well done boys! Our Girls' 1st XV played a very skilled Whakatane side last Wednesday at Litt Park, great communication and defence from Tamia Dinsdale meant she was player of the day as she put her body on the line every tackle. Regan Nathan scored two tries and Katarina Skudder one.

Netball

Te Puke Senior A played a very well drilled Trident Prem 1 side, losing 21-50. The Senior B lost to TGC League 3, 24-36. Junior A lost to Otumoetai Junior 1, 34-39. 1st XI Girls played Aquinas 1st XI in a tight match game last Wednesday, the end score being 4-1 to Aquinas. The girls worked hard to improve on their passing and communication throughout the game which resulted in a magnificent team goal, finished off with a mid-air touch by Niamh Mark. The Boys 1st XI played Aquinas 2nd XI on Monday, a very dominant display from all resulted in a 10-0 win. The 2nd XI Girls played against Otumoetai 4th XI, losing in a tight match 0-1.

Basketball

The senior Boys played TKK Tua Toa. Dominating possession throughout the game the boys managed to secure a comfortable win, 90-7. The Junior Boys played against Whangamata Area School who they had lost to in the earlier grading games. The boys played really well and won 40-28.

Orienteering

A team of girls from Te Puke High School recently competed in The Sir Edmund Hillary Navquest Orienteering Event at the Redwoods, Rotorua on 9th June. Small group facilitator Diane Paynter also participated in the event and scored 245 points. The girls' team, Summer Church, Rebecca Black, Nikki Thwaites and Dayna Rowe scored 130. Summer then went on to win a spot prize, a fifty dollar voucher from Bivouac. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the day and ran approximately 16km in heavy rain.

Diane recommends that anyone interested in a physical and mental challenge who enjoys the outdoors should contact the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre.

Our Boys 1st XI played TBC Argentina and had a good win 6-0. Jordi Langton scored four goals and Andrew Johnston two. Our Girls 1st XI played Trident. A good team effort ensured the 1-0 win with Sam Goodrick scoring the winning goal after a great set-up by Courtney Stone. The Junior Girls continued their massive wins with a 9-0 win over a Tauranga Junior team. They are looking forward to the regrading.

Hockey

The Otumoetai Red Team had a great win 5-1 against Mount Intermediate. Despite the Mount scoring quickly at the start, the Otumoetai Red Team dominated the play for the rest of the first half and were 4-1 up at halftime. A real team effort with everybody substituted during the game.

It was hard to chose a player of the day but Annabel Averill played a great game at centre forward. The game played between OIS Green Team and Aquinas saw the team reap the rewards of their hard work, winning 6-0. The Black Team had their first loss against the Mount on Friday night 3-2. The Yellow team played against Tauranga Intermediate B with Tauranga scoring first and Otumoetai levelling things up after halftime. Despite Zoe Schofield being knocked over and having an injured arm, she continued in goal and made some great saves to keep Otumoetai in the game. Final result was a 2-1 loss. Kayla Dawson had a huge game in the centre of defence and was player of the day.

Aquinas

Cross country

Eighteen students represented Aquinas College at the Waikato BOP Cross Country Champs held in Te Awamutu last week. The 3km course catered for all age groups on a mostly flat with gentle roll and a few obstacles to test the runners. Our team competed in the Junior Boys'/Girls', Intermediate Boys' and Senior Boys'/Girls' events with some outstanding results. For our Junior Girls, Dana Welten was our best placed in third. Our youngest runner, Jessica Robinson, placed a commendable eighth. Our Junior Boys' Jake Hoffart found his way into the top five, finishing fourth while Ryan Young wasn't too far behind in ninth.

Leading from the start saw Senior Girl Anneke Grogan win comfortably while Charlotte Skelton stole third place after running shoulder to shoulder with a runner and gained position after a brief slip-up less than 50 metres from the finish.

Judo

At the Waikato/Bay of Plenty 2013 Area Open Judo Championships held on site recently, Cole Maguire got bronze in the Cadets Under-66kg category, and Riley Maguire won gold in the Senior Boys Under-55kg category. Riley then took part in the national training camp.

Rueben Vergara ran hard for his 38th placing, Santana Potene got 41st and Jayden Sherriff got 64th.

Netball

BOP Netball has selected their Western Bay reps and big congratulations go to Emerson Tod and Nadia Read in making the Under-15 Premier 1 team and Centrie Newdick and Kahu Carter the Under-15 Premier 2 team. Day 2 of the Baywide Tournament saw Mount Junior A have a great win against Otumoetai to advance to the major semifinal against Rotorua. They played another great game beating Rotorua, which put them in Division 1 final against Western Heights who they had beaten on day one of the tournament. However Western Heights were too strong and won to take the Baywide title.

Rugby

On the rugby scene our Under-14 team, which amalgamates with Papamoa College, featured in a high scoring game winning 56-36 against a TBC side. William Afu was named man of the match, scoring three tries. Other try scorers were Kyren Gear, Kael Jordan, Arepeta Ormsby and Ethan Severinsen. Coached by ex-pupils Ryan Lee and Max McLaren, who both play for the Mount Colts team, the team are looking to improve as the season progresses.

We had six students represent our school at the PB/BOP Intermediate Squash Champs held in Taupo recently. Our team was Mikaia House, Matthew Brittain, Taylor Harris, Matthew Sisson, Anika Russell and Meila Eades. Taylor convincingly won the Year 7 boys' division, Matthew Sisson placed 3rd in the same division, Anika came 3rd in the Year 7 girls' division, with Meila a close 4th. Mikaia won the Year 8 boys' division beating Matthew Brittain in the final. That day the team defended the title and returned the trophy to school.

Futsal

Last Friday we entered a Junior and Senior team in the Bay of Plenty Secondary Schools' Futsal Championships. Both teams were unbeaten throughout the day with the Junior team winning the final against Otumoetai 10-0 while the Senior team had a tighter final, also against Otumoetai, before winning 3-2.

Football

On Saturday morning our First XI played Mt College First XI. It was an interesting game that brought surprises to us and the opposition. We pulled together and played a good game with the 11 players we did have and Mount fought hard for the full 80 minutes. The highlight of the game was having our goalie experience a little more of the field and even score a few goals and the lowlight was the weather being pretty chilly. Sophie Johnston had a great game and scored seven goals, Lauren Henry five, Jaime Carpenter (goalie) four and Jess Lawrence four. Our Second XI played Bethlehem College First XI on Saturday. The girls started off slow letting in two goals within the first 15 minutes. After that they came together and started working well as a team. There were many, many unlucky attempts but in the end we managed to score the team's second goal of the season, bringing the final score to 2-1 to Bethlehem College.

Unfortunately the score did not reflect how well the team played, but after a few more trainings, we will get the result we are looking for.

Hockey

The First XI hockey girls took on Otumoetai First XI last Wednesday night. With a slow and sleepy start, Otumoetai scored in the first five minutes. This shocked the girls as they have not been in this situation for a number of weeks now. This pressure led to mistakes and not working together as well as the girls could have.

On fulltime they managed to get a penalty corner, where Amy Robinson converted this to equalise the game at 1-1. Our 2nd XI also played on Wednesday night and after a tough and evenly matched game, ended the game with a draw 1-1 to Otumoetai 3rd XI. After a hard fought game on Monday night against Katikati 1st XI, our 3rd XI lost 4-0. The girls played extremely well, but unfortunately due to strong Katikati defence, they were unable to score.

Netball

On Friday night our League One netball played Bethlehem College Open A and won 50-21. This was a brilliant game as it was the first game this season where the team clicked perfectly, and every single player played well together proving that all the trainings have paid off. Many intercepts and turnovers were made and the team's ability to work together definitely showed in the final score result. The League Two girls played Aquinas on Friday night also and won 42-17. The girls now sit second on the table.

Basketball

Our Senior Premier girls lost to Hamilton Girls' High School by 14 points on Friday night. Hamilton Girls are the current National Champions so it was a very good score for the girls to get at the start of the season. They also played women's on Tuesday night and won by 40 points.

Hockey

BC Boys Hockey 1st XI had a good win over Tauranga 2nd XI Boys this week. The boys won 5-0 with the defensive trio of Luke Fisher in goal, Garrick Du Toit and Hamish Dallas holding a strong defensive line to keep Tauranga scoreless. Goal scorers this week were Thomas Stemmer, Andrew Fraser Mackenzie, Garrick Du Toit, Matthew Davis and Josh Nicholson. The goal scored by Garrick came from a penalty corner pass that went to Tim Arlt and with a well manoeuvered pass allowing Garrick to drag flick the ball into the top right hand corner of the goal.

Football

The 1st XI boys played Tauranga Boys 2nd XI College last weekend. Tauranga scored first with a penalty, which was the first goal conceded by BC this season in four outings. Luke Bryenton equalled the score when he volleyed the ball home from the edge of the six yard box after some fine build-up play. The next goal came when Strauss Boom penetrated the heart of TBC's midfield and chipped the ball home over the head of the opposing goalkeeper giving BC a 2-1 halftime lead. BC dominated possession in the second half and, following a shot and parry from the TBC keeper central midfielder, Dylan Ramohitaj, slammed the ball home to score the third and final BC goal. Man of the match was Samuel Sutton. The team will now prepare for the top of the table clash with Otumoetai College this weekend at Ferguson Park.

Rugby

The Bethlehem Under-14 team travelled to Trident High School for a return match on Saturday. Bethlehem had overcome Trident at home earlier in the grading round but were expecting a tougher challenge from Trident at home. This was clear from the start of the match with Trident scoring the first try. At half time Bethlehem were back in the lead by 17-12. The even match continued in the second half with both teams finishing with four tries, and only separated by conversions with Bethlehem coming out just ahead at 24-22.
