Seven teams are still in the hunt after four months of tight action in the Bayfair Baywide premier club rugby competition.

Several teams have been playing virtual finals football for weeks, and tomorrow will be no different.

Tauranga Sports is the only side to have booked a home semifinal, so will likely continue to tinker with new combinations necessitated by the Steamers enforced absence from the competition's knockout rounds.

Their opposition, Rotoiti, have won six of their last seven to sit in seventh spot - just three points back from fourth-placed Jordan Cupholders Te Puna.

The team must win to keep their hopes alive, so Sports are in for quite a welcome at Emery Park this weekend.

Rotoiti's need to win is due to the match between Te Puna and fifth-placed Opotiki at Maramatanga Park. A win by either side, coupled with a Rotoiti loss, would see Rotoiti too far back to make the semifinals.

The match is a huge one for both sides - with the winner dramatically boosting their chances of making the postseason. Opotiki has a date next week with sixth-placed Greerton Marist, while Te Puna will play Whakarewarewa at Puarenga Park.

Marist play Te Puke Sports at Greerton Park in another match with playoff implications. A Sports win would earn the defending champions a home semifinal, while Marist need to win to keep their hopes alive.

Mount Maunganui is another team in desperate need of a win heading into the competition's final week. They play Te Puke Sports away in week 18, so must win against Whakarewarewa to put themselves in a good position. Whakarewarewa has eighth spot sewn up, but is in good form after last week's narrow win over Greerton Marist.

The match between Rangataua and Paroa was shaping up as one of the biggest games of the year, but results in recent weeks mean Paroa cannot catch Rangataua in the race to avoid elimination.

Both teams have won three of their 16 matches, Rangataua holding an unassailable 10-point cushion thanks to eight extra bonus points and a draw.

Division One

Things are not quite as tight in the race for the playoffs in Division One, but there are still several teams with plenty to play for this weekend.

Katikati's season is on the line at Moore Park against second-placed Poroporo.

In sixth place on 39 competition points, Katikati are five points back from fourth-placed Waikite, so must win against a side that have won more games than any other team in the division so far this season. Competition leaders Rangiuru will face Whakatane Marist at home at Centennial Park.

Secondary school rugby

With Super 8 rugby taking a break, all eyes will be on the Baywide first XV competition.

The feature game is between unbeaten competition leaders Otumoetai College and Bethlehem College, who will be looking to consolidate their place in the top four.
