Rangataua stunned Baywide club rugby leaders Whakarewarewa with a 26-20 win on Saturday, further squeezing a jam-packed ladder.
It wasn't enough to lift Rangataua above third spot but it boosts them up to 23 points, just two behind Tauranga Sports and three adrift of Whakarewarewa. Mount Maunganui, boosted by the return
of Chiefs player Mike Delany, left it late before claiming a valuable 30-28 win over Te Puke, with Paul Tietjens' last-minute try sealing the victory.
Waikite had a late penalty attempt that would have given them victory over Whakatane Marist but the attempt went wide, leading the scores tied at 22-all, while Tauranga Sports humbled Te Puna 87-10 in a 13-try mauling.
