Young Tauranga racing driver Richie Stanaway experienced a weekend of mixed fortunes but still managed to extend his lead in the German Formula 3 Championship.
The fifth round of the German F3 series was at the Zolder circuit in Belgium for the ninth and tenth races of the season.
Stanaway, 19, qualified on
pole position for Saturday's race by a 0.266s margin over nearest rival Marco Sorensen (Denmark) and raced clear to win the 18-lap race by a commanding 13.1secs in his Van Amersfoort Racing Dallara-Volkswagen.
Austrian Klaus Bachler finished second ahead of Sorensen and Stanaway's seventh win from nine starts extended his series lead to 22 points.
Qualifying for race two was interrupted by several yellow flags late in the session which prevented Stanaway from improving on second fastest time.
Pole position for race two was taken by Tom Blomqvist - the son of former world rally champion Stig Blomqvist who grew up in Auckland and gained his first racing experience in New Zealand karting.
Stanaway made a slow start from grid two, slipping to third behind Sorensen and was then pushed wide in turn two which left him fifth.
He finished in that position while Blomqvist claimed his first win and Sorensen was second. The Zolder weekend puts Stanaway on 94 points ahead of Sorensen on 76. There is now a two-month summer break until the next round at Austria's Red Bull Ring on August 13-14.
Phillips fourth
Mount Maunganui's Mason Phillips rode to a fourth place finish in the MX1 class at Sunday's second round of the Canadian Motocross Nationals.
The Wastelands MX track at Naniamo on Vancouver Island hosted the latest round of the Canadian series where Phillips improved on his first round effort by claiming ninth in the opening moto and a strong fourth in the second race.
The combined result earned Phillips fourth overall for the day and moves him up to 11th in the championship standings.
This year, Phillips is racing for the Kini Red Bull KTM team on the new KTM 350cc MX1 class racer. His teammate is Cambridge teenager Kieran Leigh riding in the MX2 class.
Leigh continued the promising start to his Canadian campaign with two ninth placings at The Wastelands and also moved up to ninth in the MX2 championship.
The nine-round Canadian series now begins its journey east across the country with round three this Sunday at Wild Rose MX Park near Calgary, Alberta.
