Rotoiti's recent run of poor form may have turned around after a nailbiting 24-23 win over Rangataua.
In recent weeks Rotoiti have struggled to put a winning formula together in the Bartercard Baywide competition but put it all together on Saturday with a spectacular individual try, tough defence and hang-on-to-the-death finish
against Rangataua at Te Ariki Park.
In an action-packed match, Rotoiti fullback Sikeli Vorenasu stole the show. Vorenasu demonstrated that he can be not only a brilliant finisher, dancing down the sideline to score an 80m solo try, but can also set them up.
The light-footed back danced his way around a couple of Rangataua defenders then put teammate Josev Sevata in for a try. As well as his tryscoring, Vorenasu showed he is also pretty handy with the boot, kicking two penalties and a drop goal.
The game was a close-run affair, with Rangataua fullback Rory McConnochie scoring his side's first touchdown and slotting 13 points with his boot. Rotoiti led 18-10 at the break before Timoti Gardiner got Rangataua back in the game with a try.
The successful conversion took the scoreline to 21-20 before the teams traded a penalty apiece for Rotoiti to grab a one-point victory.
Whakarewarewa were another team to find winning form thanks to a four-try effort over Whakatane Marist in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. Former New Zealand secondary schools halfback Kapaeriere Wharewera opened the Whaka try tally in the first half and then grabbed a second touchdown, with Akira Mako also picking up a double.
Whaka sharp-shooter Kelly Haimona was in excellent form, converting all four of his team's tries and adding four penalty goals. Whakatane's points came from a try to Eadon Rowson and a penalty and conversion to Craig Edwards.
The Western Bay Battle of the Bridge was taken out by Mount Maunganui who posted a four-tries-to nil defeat of defending Baywide champions Tauranga Sports. The comprehensive 24-6 win also relieved Tauranga Sports of the Jordan Cup.
Long-serving Mount players Chris and Troye Elvin led the charge with a try apiece, with Tate Smith and Sam Mayes also dotting ball down. Matt Golding added two conversions, with Nick Evemy kicking two penalties for Tauranga Sports.
Te Puke Sports, the quiet achievers in the top echelon this season, re-inked third in the title race with a solid 33-5 win against Waikite. The home side raced out to a 26-0 lead at halftime before repelling solid Waikite defence in the second spell. Gideon Uelese continued his try-scoring spree, with Nathan Harris, Roger Berkin, Lane Gibson and Sipa Moi Moi also crossing.
Opotiki's flying fullback, Te Amo Wilbore, continued his try-scoring blitz to add two touchdowns to a season tally that now stands at 12 as his team defeated Te Puna 30-22.
The upset of the day came in division one, when Marist St Michaels lowered the colours of Te Teko for just the second time this season, winning 18-7.
Katikati posted their fourth draw of the season, 17-all with Reporoa, while Ngongotaha and Rangiuru also battled to a 13-all deadlock.
