Bay of Plenty golfer Landyn Edwards surprised everyone to lead the qualifying yesterday for the British Amateur - except for his coach Dominic Sainsbury, who labelled him an exciting talent.
Edwards leds the 288-strong field attempting to qualify for the British Amateur Championship by one shot at the halfway stage aftera four-under par 68 at the Hillside Golf Club in England.
Today, he and Ben Campbell qualified to contest the Amateur Championship after making the field for the matchplay segment in northwest England.
Campbell, New Zealand's No.1, carded a second round of 69 at the Hesketh Golf Club to follow his opening round of 73 and finish in a tie for fourth to book his place in the knockout stage.
Edwards slipped down the leaderboard with a four-over par 75 at the Hesketh to finish in a five-way share of 10th. The three other New Zealanders failed to qualify with Tyler Lock improving on his first round 76 with a 73 to finish two shots outside the total. Daniel Pearce shot 77 to follow his opening 79 and Fraser Wilkin's 77 was a four-shot improvement.
Sainsbury is impressed by Edwards' resurgence after recovering from a shoulder injury. "He has always had the ability and always wanted to better himself," said the 35-year-old.
"He went over to the UK with a clear head and optimistic of his chances."
