Otumoetai Eels look likely to have lost a key member of their title-contending team after Michael Johnston took a knee to the head in their romp over Ngongotaha.
Johnston, a pivotal player in the 40-10 win, was moved into the recovery position as play carried on. But with barely minutes left
on the clock, the referee called time when the ball went into touch.
Johnston was taken to Rotorua Hospital by ambulance and was believed to have suffered a concussion.
The incident marked the end of a feisty second half, which included an on-field punch-up involving players and spectators. The Otumoetai manager was hit with a pigtail fence standard and fists were flying.
Both episodes marred an otherwise lacklustre game as the Eels dominated from the outset, locking in a try within minutes. A halftime score of 28-4 was complimentary to the home side; the difference could easily have been a lot more.
And Ngongotaha should thank the referee for the points they did score.
Their first-half try came after the touch judge held his flag up indicating the ball was out, yet the referee didn't see and allowed Jason Puddles to touch down. In the second half, a double-movement from Tai Pelesasa was allowed.
Ngongotaha coach Damien White said the troubles started before kick-off.
"We're struggling to pull together a side every weekend," White said. "We had nine forwards leave the club this year from premier level and this is what we're stuck with.
We'd be lucky to have 13 premier players starting and at this level and this competition you can't afford to be like that.
"The Eels are a very classy side and, unless you come with your A game, you will get beat.
"When we did put a bit of pressure on them I thought we were going to score some more but we fell away.
"It's hard, especially as guys were getting injured early and we lost a couple of playmakers straightaway but that's football."
White said the fight was ugly.
"I don't like it myself but it doesn't help when you've management on the other side rarking the players up and encouraging them. I said to the touch judges they had to control the game.
"You can't blame the officials, it's the boys at the end of the day and the officials are doing the best they can but, as they say, you give a monkey a machine gun ..."
White called the ambulance for the downed Otumoetai player and said Johnston would probably be out for three weeks.
In other matches, Ngaruawahia were beaten by Turangawaewae 0-4, while on the other side of the spectrum Taniwharau racked up 102-6 against College Old Boys, Pacific beat Tauranga Whalers 14-10, Central were too strong for Taupo Phoenix 26-14 and Hukanui won the bottom of the table clash with Hamilton Hornets 20-14.
Scorers: Ngongotaha 10 (Jason Puddles, Tai Pelesasa tries, John Ririnui con) Otumoetai Eels 40 (Owen Rhind, Josh Moore 3, Lance Rolleston, Matt Mason, Detroit Paki tries, Josh Weeden try, 4 cons).
