It's a trophy donated by a Bay of Plenty golfing great and the region's top girls have their eyes firmly on it.

After three matches in the inaugural junior girls' interprovincial championships in Rotorua, Bay of Plenty remain unbeaten.

They have beaten Waikato, North Harbour and Canterbury and after a bye yesterday afternoon are in good shape to finish off the competition.

"They've all been tough games," coach Mikayla Bell said. "But we've come out on top. Every game we go through we need to be prepared to dig in deep because of the way it's set up. But we're in a good position and the confidence has built up.

"They way they played [against Canterbury] we've seen some of the best rounds as far as four and five (players), we were shooting in the mid-70s. It was really good golf."

The competition was devised after Bay of Plenty Golf chief executive Chris McAlpine sought opinion from the country's golfing districts and the competition was born. The trophy was donated by Bay great Brenda Ormsby.

It is being contested at the Rotorua and Springfield golf clubs this week.

Yesterday in driving rain and strong winds, Bay beat Canterbury 5 to , with No1 Grace Senior's round against Zhantel Weekes halved. Today they will match up against Taranaki and Northland before a final match against Auckland tomorrow.

"We'll take each game as it comes, with three wins we've got to keep focussed," Bell said. "We have the most points we can get at the moment.

"It's hard when you have two rounds in one day but we've played a lot of golf before this tournament and when we leave a couple will go on to the Booth Shield tournament in Gisborne."

Bay of Plenty are represented by Grace Senior (0.6hcp), Tyla Kingi (2.3) and Alanna Campbell (9.4) as the lead three, with Zoe Tasma (11.8), Brooke Polley (12.1) and Erikah Waiariki (14.2) playing handicap matchplay. Kingi, Senior and Campbell are all unbeaten so far.
