Not even a week of heavy rain can discourage the enthusiasts at the Waihi Beach Dirt Track Club.
Before the summer of grass-roots racing could be completed last weekend, club officials had to mark off a water-logged section of the back straight using cones and run a grader through part of
the infield to widen the track again so the 2010-11 points series could be completed.
The racing in the saloon-car classes and the mini stocks at the scenic hillside track on Saturday saw close points battles settled in a number of classes on the final day of the season.
Among the final-round winners were Escort racer Rick Purcell, who took the Open class honours, while Russell Corbett (Datsun 160J) and Darcy Webb (Ford Cortina) claimed the wins in 2-litre Open and 2-litre Classic respectively.
Shane Hammerton (Honda CRX) was the final-round winner in Production while the Youth Ministocks were won by Luke Alderdice, and the Adult Ministock victory for the day went to Buzz Latham.
An end-of-season fun day and demolition derby will be held at Waihi Beach tomorrow, with racing from 11.30am.
The final fixture for the season is the Queen's Birthday weekend saloon car and stock-car invitation event on Saturday, June 4, and the club will have its end-of-season prizegiving in June.
