College Sport: Trio medal at surf lifesaving champs

OTUMOETAI
Jessica Lacy, Emily Campbell and Katie Wilson all medalled at the NZ Surf Lifesaving Champs.
Jessica won the U16 Women's Beach Sprint, silver U19 Beach relay and bronze U16 Beach relay with Emily Campbell.
Emily also won silver in the U16 Board relay. Katie won bronze in the U16 Board relay and the U16 Board rescue and silver in the U16 taplin.
Our rowers competed at the North Island regatta at Lake Karapiro, with the best result in the Under 17 double with Ethan Inglis and Jeff Brayshaw winning the silver.

Beckie Thurlow, Holly McNabb and Kendall Hofland are all new rowers this year did well to make it through to finals.
The BOPSS Athletics meet was held in perfect conditions.

JG 100m Emily Farron, Robei Bidois, Jessica Gadsbey, IG 100m Marni Heidkamp, SG100 Vanessa Hill, SB100m Jay Michalik, JH200 Roebi Bidois, Emily Farron, Tracey Austin, IG 200m Hannah Dearsley, Marni Heidkamp, SG200m Emma Jackson, Carmel O'Rafferty, IB200m Teaz Grayson, Jordan Jensen, SB 200m Jaqy Michalik , Jack Thompson, JG 300 Jessica Gadsbey.
Athletes then qualified for the BOP/Waikato event held last weekend. Joseph Reynolds had another outstanding day winning the SB High jump with a 1.90 jump. He also came 2nd in the Hurdles and Triple Jump with a PB.
Claudia Richardson won silver in the IG High Jump with 1.55m.
Vanessa Hill won silver in the 100m and also with a PB in the Triple Jump. Emma Jackson won bronze in the 400m, 200m and Long Jump.
Jessica Gadsbey won bronze in the JG 300m and Grace Nunn won silver in the 3000m.
Our cricket boys played TBC. Batting first they established a solid 230/6 with Julian Bradley (82) and Vaughan Wilson (38) the top scorers. TBC replied all out for 120 with our top bowlers Chris Charlton, Julian Bradley and Jaskaran Singh.
The BOPSS Volleyball Championships were completed last weekend. The Senior A Girls and Boys both finished second. Both the Boys and Girls B teams had outstanding results finishing 5th & 7th respectively. The Boys and Girls C teams and Girls D team all competed well. Six teams will be off to Nationals next week to compete.
Luke Roguski continues to perform with excellence on his BMX . Over the weekend Luke won the Oceania Continental Championships in Auckland in the 15 Boys grade and the Summer International meet. Brent Roguski and Dylan Ngatai are also in the NZ BMX Development squad.
BETHLEHEM

The past week saw a number of students competing impressively across a range of sports, such as netball, cricket, hockey.
Already students have been selected for some high level winter sports teams which augurs well for next term.
Congratulations to Libby Drake who has done exceptionally well in making the BOP Lois Muir Challenge Netball squad.
Congratulations also go to Hannah Marshall and Rose Keddell who have been through a long selection process to make the U21 Women's Midlands Team.
The team will be travelling to Dunedin later this year to compete at nationals.
The 1st cricket XI team continued their unbeaten run this season with an excellent hard fought win over Trident High School.
We batted first and found runs hard to come by. However, we managed to make a total of 150 runs.
Fortunately, the team then fielded well and with tight bowling restricted the opposition to 127, with the last 5 wickets falling for just 34 runs. The victory secured us the Rob Leslie Shield.
The 1st Xl now look forward to playing St Peter's College in the next round of the Gillette Cup. - Matt Smalberger and Hannah Marshall, Sports captains
TAURANGA BOYS

Waterpolo: The TBC team travelled to the North Island Secondary School Champs in Auckland last weekend.
We had wins over St Bernard's, Kristin, Mt Maunganui and Kings' College with losses to Auckland Grammar and Rangitoto College, which meant we finished 5th at the tournament, a great effort with 16 teams competing.
Triathlon: The Waikato/BOP champs were held at Karapiro last Tuesday. TBC had boys competing in each of the age-groups.
In the U19's we had Partrick Burrows finish second, Hayden Moorhouse in fourth and Niklas Ansorge in fifth.
In the U16's, Mungo Mason and Hamish McGeorge finished in the top 10. Cameron Wells placed fourth in the U14's.
Cricket: The 1st XI played Westlake on March 14-15.
The last exchange of the season against Westlake Boys' High School produced two close matches. Our batsmen found some form near the end of the season. Shaun McCarthy was the stand out player in an innings of 217.
Westlake looked on top early on with a 154-run opening partnership but some quick wickets and sharp fielding meant that we prevailed with four balls to spare.
In the Twenty20 fixture, we came frustratingly close again. After a quick start for Westlake, the fielding and bowling was tight and we restricted them to 140.
In reply we batted well with some solid partnerships but the Westlake spinners bowled tightly and we came up 20 runs shy of a good win.
Our first XI travelled to Whangarei Boys' High School for a Gillette Cup qualifier. Elliott Timoti and Tom MacRury opened the batting and were off to a steady start at 70 for no loss at drinks. However, after they were dismissed the wheels wobbled a bit but some mature batting by Cam Neal and Alex Oakley saw us get to 167 all out.
In reply, Whangarei never got going. Tommy Clout was fired up and Josh Dwight showed good control with the ball. Myles Timoti and James Boyd were unplayable. Highlights were Boyd's 'ball of the century' to dismiss their best batsmen with a ball between his legs. In the end it was a great performance by our boys and Whangarei were all out for 37. A great performance by TBC.
Golf: Our golfers travelled to Gisborne for the Super 8 golf tournament. The senior A team comprised of Cameron Neal, James Cannon, Charlie Hilliar and Jin Hwang finished second just four strokes behind Rotorua Boys' High. The tournament was played over 54 holes and Jin was the leading individual overall with and impressive five under par and a clear winner by five strokes.
Clay Target: TBC sent two teams to the Auckland Met Club where there were 120 shooters. Highlights were Brody Clark shooting 60/60 in the points round and Mathew Dyer shooting 10/10 in the single barrel.
Overall we took out the points score with 272/300. A good day for our shooters and we look forward to Super 8 and other competitions throughout the year.
Volleyball: The BOP champs were held last weekend. Our senior A team started well with some good wins over Mount A and Otumoetai B. Heading into the finals on Sunday, TBC was refreshed and ready for a big day. We had Trident A up first and we got stuck in straight away with nice options from Hiki Ngata and great blocking from Aaron Carroll and Brad Fullerton. This was a tight game in which we prevailed in five sets. The win against Trident put us into the finals against Otumoetai A. This was another close match, after winning the first two sets, our boys fought back well to take the third and final after being down 14-6. A great performance saw us become BOP champs and top seeds for nationals next week.
Athletics: On Saturday the Tauranga Boys' College Athletics team travelled to Hamilton for the Waikato/BOP Champs.
The middle distance runners did well with Michael Sutton taking out the 3000m, Javahn Kennedy placing second in the intermediate boys and Andrew Robinson winning the junior boys grade. The 800m saw Matt Strange finish second in the senior boys and Daniel Hintz recording the same result in the junior grade.
A highlight of the day was Julian Oakley winning the Senior Boys 1500m, where the winner is presented with the John Walker shoes trophy. This incorporates the shoes in which he wore to run 3:49 for the mile in 1975.
Julian decided to focus on the 1500m and after a slow start pulled away with 600m to go for the win. Aaron Fredheim finished third in the junior boys 1500m.
Other standout performances were Alex Colvin winning the intermediate boys long jump and triple jump. Oliver Ranby finished second in the 200m and fourth in the 100m and 400m.
All athletes that finished in the top three will be competing in the North Island Secondary School champs in two weeks.
Wrestling: Marshall Gibson travelled to the Auckland Secondary School Champs of the 21st of March. He won gold in the freestyle against opponents from Hamilton Boys' and Kelston Boys' Colleges. A great result from Marshall, who now focusing on the North Island Champs and making the New Zealand team to travel to Australia.
AQUINAS
Three Aquinas College pupils are this week celebrating being selected to represent their country in their chosen sport.
Grace Eglinton has been named in the NZ Under 15 Girls' Waterpolo team. And, brothers Matthew and Connor Strong have both been selected for the NZ Under 19 Water Ski Racing Team. The team will be going to Australia in May to take on Victoria.
For Grace her waterpolo achievement comes after many years of success in the pool. She is from a family of successful swimmers, and only recently performed well at the NZ National Age Groups' Swimming Championships where she achieved a personal best in the 200IM to make the finals and finish in fourth place.
Matthew, 14, and his 11 year-old brother Connor have both been waterskiing since they were 9 and have both represented NZ before. Matthew is currently in the World Development Squad, and is working towards a place in the NZ team for the World's event held in Australia in September.
Just two weekends ago, both competed in the Bryce Newton 100-miler classic race at Rotorua's Blue Lakes. Matthew took out the 50-miler race in the open class, while Connor won the sub-junior event.
TAURANGA GIRLS

We had many girls selected from BOP Athletic Champs to go through to the Waikato/BOP Champs. Junior girls had Brooke Sommerfield placing 1st in 100m, 1st in long jump and 1st in intermediate relay. Jessica Bitcheno came 2nd in 800m and 2nd in 1500m. Kirsty Burrows got a 3rd placing in 1500m and 2nd in 300m. Hannah Philpot placed 1st in high jump and Shannon Va'a clinched a 1st in shotput.
Intermediate girls had Abby Goldie doing well, winning 100m and 200m, 3rd in long jump and 1st in relay. Also Amy Robinson did very well coming 2nd in 100m, 1st in 80m hurdles, 1st in long jump and 1st in relay. Isabella Kirk placed first in 1500m, with Casey Blackwell gaining a 3rd placing in 3000m. Makayla Daysh placed 3rd in shotput. In senior girls Simone Rockliffe placed 3rd in 3000m, Bella Andrews 2nd in 100m hurdles and Chelsea McQueen 2nd in discus throw.
Our waterpolo team had awesome results at the NISS in Auckland. They went through unbeaten and in the final they smashed Takapuna Grammar 9-2. This gave them a gold medal in division 2.
In the NZ Community Trust Cricket competition, TGC won the BOP competition after beating Aquinas and Te Puke. They will now be competing against Waikato, Northland and Poverty Bay schools.
Kara Timmer competed in the International Taekwon-do World Champs in Wellington, placing 1st in individual special techniques, individual power, team special techniques, team power, team sparring and 2nd in team patterns. This made her overall the best junior female and part of the best junior female team. Well done Kara.
At our school tennis champs we had some intense games played, with Kerry Hampton taking 1st place in Championship singles, and also taking 1st place in Championship doubles with partner Brittany Sullivan. Runner up was Anna Mahon in singles and Anna Mahon and Jordan Finlay in doubles.
On the plate side of the draw, we had Kirsty Pentecost winning singles, with Maddi Shanks placing 2nd. Also Kirsty and Maddi were partners beating Toni Bullock and Andrea Tauai in the plate double final.
In volleyball the Senior A team won the Bay of Plenty Championships in the weekend after two solid wins over Otumoetai College and Bethlehem College. Congratulations also to the Senior B Team who beat Trident A and ended up being placed in the top 5 for the Bay of Plenty also. - Zoe Wieringa
TE PUKE

Swimming Championships: The overall highlight was the record-breaking performance of Sarah Greaves, setting a new mark of 1.12.39 for the girls open 100m backstroke - Sarah also won the senior girls 50m and 100m breaststroke.
Natalie Peat won the girls open 200m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 100m individual medley, senior girls 50m and 100m freestyle.
In the under 15 boys division, Buck Tapuke won the 200m freestyle, 100m backstroke and 100m Individual Medley, while Jordan Hide won the boys under 15 years 50m breaststroke and 100m breaststroke. Dylan Flavell won the boys under 15 years 50m freestyle and 100m freestyle.
The junior girls titles were shared between Kathryn Bennett (100m and 200m freestyle) and Sapphire Tapsell (100m individual medley, 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke). Mikaere Teki won the junior boys 50m breaststroke, 100m breaststroke and 50m backstroke.
Waikato BOP Secondary Schools Athletics Championships: Hemana Takuira-Mita achieved a notable result representing Te Puke High School at the Waikato BOP Secondary Schools Athletics Championships, held on Saturday at Hamilton's Porritt Park. Hemana placed 2nd in the senior boys shot put event and has been selected to compete at the North Island Athletics Championships.
Netball: Following the senior trials at the beginning of this term, our EastPack Senior A team was named - with only three players missing from last year's squad. Players to make their Senior A debuts this year are Piki Tai, Meretaka Ronaki, Toia Tiwha, Shannon Bennett, Rickee Tangimataiti and Lei-Lani Carroll.
To ensure that the team is ready for the start of next term's Harbourside competition, squad training will commence next month. The players are also looking forward to having this year's Upper North Island Secondary Schools tournament so close to home this year - with the event underway at Mount Maunganui on August 22nd.
MT MAUNGANUI

Our senior boys waterpolo team entered 1st division North Island Senior champs for the first time in several years and had an awesome result finishing 7th from 26 teams.
This placing in top 8 sees them moved into the premier grade for the NZSS Waterpolo champs to be held in Wellington in the school holidays. Mt boys beat Hutt International to take the 7th place. Tauranga Boys finished in 5th place.
The senior girls played in the second division and finished 4th in a 1-goal match against Kings for 3rd and 4th.
Kahleia Josephson was selected in the NZ U15 Girls Waterpolo team, travelling to Australia to compete in July.
The Waikato Athletic champs were held at Porritt stadium in Hamilton on Saturday and unfortunately the date clashed with a lot of our top athletes who were in the BOP Volleyball champs.
Only 2 students from school competed with outstanding results. Trudi Greig finished 3rd in the senior girls 100 metres and 4th in the 200 metres and Emma Marumaru Flynn was 2nd in the junior girls 200m, 2nd shotput and 3rd in 100m.
Both girls are competing this weekend in the Waikato/BOP team at the North Island Athletic Champs.
Last weekend in Rotorua swimmers who had qualified for Div 2 Nationals that were to be held in Christchurch, held a special Christchurch relief Fund Swim meet and raised $16,000.
Swimmers competed from all over NZ. Kathryn van der Zanden finaled in seven events and placed 2nd in the 400m freestyle in a time of 4.45 and 3rd in 800m 9.50.
Two of our students competed last week in the Auckland Secondary schools Wrestling champs and both finished first in their weight categories. Kellyn Chapman in the junior 46kg division and Chad Hay-Jones in the senior 85kg category. Great achievement in a very competitive Auckland field.
North Island Secondary Schools Champs are next week then the NZ Secondary Schools Saturday April 9. Chad has made the short list for selection into the NZ Secondary Schools Wrestling Team to Australia for the Down Under Games.
Congratulations to the following students who have been selected in the Tauranga City Basketball age group rep teams: U19 Girls, Ellen Pirere, U19 Boys, Ethan Smith, Caleb Mattison-Smith and Kolby Mackie, U17 girls Sherelle Piwari, U17 A Boys Sam Smith U17 B boys John Geronimo, Oscar Gray and Chan Desmond.
These students will be competing in the Rotorua Easter tournament against teams from all other the North Island and then at Basketball New Zealand Premierships which are regional qualifying tournaments for the National Championships.
KATIKATI

One of our very talented Year 8 students - Dylan Morris has been selected for the Under 13 National Squad for Football.
Cricket: Another great victory for the Katikati First Eleven, this time over Mount Maunganui's X1. We won the toss and elected to bat which seemed like a good idea with David Lancaster and Jaspreet Singh putting on 45. Katikati looked to be in trouble not long after with in form Jacob Morton soon out. Katikati was tinkering on the brink of disaster at 6 for 77 until Brody Gilroy go the innings back on track. Katikati was all out for a modest 132, with Mt Maunganui's Derek Wilson finishing with suburb figures of 5 for 32. Well done to him.
Katikati knew that they were going to have to bowl very well and they did. With Sam Harrison ripping out 3 of the Mounts top 4 batsmen cheaply. Both Braden Brewer and Jacob Morton bowled superbly and the Mount were all out for 75.
Braden Brewer ending the game with superb figures of 4 for 10 off 6 overs and Jacob Morton 3 for 12 off his four overs.
Waikato/Bay of Plenty Athletics: A small team of athletes competed at the Waikato BOP Athletics champs held at Porritt Stadium on last Saturday.
Emma Shanley-McDonald, Gina Swanney, Thomas Darling, Vasini Uilou and Lose Uilou competed.
These students all placed in the top 3 at Thames Valley Athletics.
All the students did well with Lose Uilou placing 3rd in the Junior Girls Shotput with a throw of 9.35 (which is further than the current KKC School record for Junior Girls Shotput).
Well done to these students.
