Tauranga Boys'
The Gillette Cup Regional semifinal game last week between Tauranga Boys' College and St Peter's Cambridge was a game to rival the World Cup final in its tense finish.
TBC won the toss and took to the field in the drizzle. St Peter's were bowled out for 125
in the 40th over thanks to Myles Timoti's 4/19 off his 10 overs.
In reply, Tauranga Boys' College had a steady start losing their first wicket at 32 in the 15th over. However, from a relatively strong position at 2/61, the wheels began to wobble with Tauranga Boys' losing a steady stream of wickets to the St Peter's spin attack.
It came down to the last wicket with the scores level but thanks to a cool head Elliott Timoti was able to steer TBC home with an unbeaten 55.
It was three games and three wins for the Junior A Volleyball team. In the first game against Otumoetai College we were down in the first set 7-1 and then came back to win in the set 25-17 and won the second set by the same margin.
Our second game was versus Whakatane HS with a set each before TBC won the third set 15-9. The last game against Western Heights High School B was an easy 2-0 win.
The Tauranga Boys' College South American Tour was a huge success. The boys travelled to Argentina and Chile, playing rugby, hockey, volleyball and tennis against teams from all over South America. It was a great experience and a very successful trip.
The South American tour was a trip of a lifetime and an amazing experience with the sport that was played, the people and the billets we met, the South American culture and the chicas.
Tauranga Girls'
As this is the final article I will be writing for Tauranga Girls College I thought I would recognise a few people.
Firstly, I would like to congratulate every student who has had achievements within sport in 2011. It has been a hugely successful year for Tauranga Girls College with numerous regional, North Island, national and international titles achieved by individuals and teams in our school.
Each of these included huge commitment from not only students but also from parents, team managers, coaches and officials. So on behalf of every student I would like to thank the volunteers who give up their time and allow the sport to take place.
If it were not for you none of us would have the opportunity to try new sports, better our skills and meet new people.
These great achievements from the year are being recognised at the Bay of Plenty Sports Awards on Friday, November 18 at TECT arena. This is an awards evening where there are Open awards and also Secondary School awards with many categories.
This year Tauranga Girls' College is very evident through out the evening. Olivia Chance, Andrea Tauai and Jessie Banks are finalists in the Waiariki Institute of Technology Secondary School Sportswoman of the Year section. Michelle Pollard and Tamara Patete, both teachers, are finalists in the Codeblue Secondary School Coach of the Year category.
All three finalists in Secondary School Girls Team of the Year are from Tauranga Girls College, this includes the Kayaking team, Senior A Volleyball team and Running team. The Secondary School Best Student Contribution to Sport has Jacinta Coleman, Zoe Wieringa and Andrea Tauai as finalists and also in the Open Section the Eves Realty Junior Sportswoman of the Year Award has seen Kara Timmer as a finalist along with ex-student Zoe Stevenson.
This is a huge number of students that have been named as finalists and shows the impact Tauranga Girls College is having on the Bay of Plenty community.
The Tauranga Girls College Equestrian team has competed at the North Island Secondary Schools Showjumping Championships held at St Peters in Cambridge.
This is the highest competition the team competes in and this year they took home the gold, bringing home the trophy. The team consisted of Emma Doran, Georgina Wratten-Lowe, Megan O'Grady and Kari Wratten-Lowe.
So overall 2011 has been an amazingly successful year and I know that the students of Tauranga Girls College have hugely enjoyed it.

MMC held their sports awards last week at Classic Flyers.
Guest Speaker for the evening was Bull Allen, a very entertaining and timely guest speaker at the end of the Rugby World Cup.
Mark "Bull" Allen is a former All Black and a TV presenter with Sky Sports. His words of advice for our students that came across loud and clear were not to take shortcuts in your preparation. If you take short cuts, you cheat yourself and your team.
The fact is, if you continue taking short cuts e.g.) at trainings, when it comes to the crunch at competition time you will continue to use the short cuts and jeopardise the whole outcome and result for yourself and your team.

Individuals who featured on the podium winning National Titles were Ben Johnston, 1st U16 100m Rescue Medley, Mason Pickering 1st 50m Brick carry without fins and 2nd in U19 100m tube swim with patient and fins and Simone Couvee was 3rd in the U19woman's 100m tube swim with patient and fins.
