Bay of Plenty Steamers maintained their dominance on top of the ITM Cup premiership table with a resounding 36-8 win over a humiliated Waikato side.
It was a fiery match right from the beginning with both teams going toe to toe in an all-in brawl after Waikato were stopped short of
the Steamers try line.
Steamers captain Colin Bourke said there was nothing to the dust up with both teams just giving each other a friendly reminder of the rivalry between the two provinces.
The Steamers dominated most aspects of last night's game in front of almost 2500 spectators at Rotorua International Stadium.
Bay of Plenty now go 14 points from three matches at the top of the table.
Bourke said he was proud of how his team performed.
"I just said to the boys, I'm just proud to be a part of [the win] and I hope they realise that if they put that performance on the park every week, they will be right up there with the best in the country."
The Steamers were the first to score with a Dan Waenga penalty 15 minutes into the match after the home side piled on the pressure and the visitors were pinged for an infringement in the ruck.
Toby Arnold scored the first of his two tries 8 minutes later - a just reward for the forwards who had battled hard to stop any advances from a Waikato pack who turned over twice as much ball 24 compared with 13 from the home side. Waenga converted the try before Waikato would open their account 27 minutes into the match with a 40m penalty from five-eight Trent Renata. Waenga would add two more penalties to have the home side going into the break 16-3 ahead.
Bay of Plenty's intensity dropped off straight after the break and missed a number of regulation first-up tackles but Waikato were woeful and lacked the ability to punish the home side for their discrepancies. Waenga would score his last points of the night with a 50m penalty 9 minutes into the half.
The Steamers second try came from 18 phases, a 2m scrum and some individual brilliance from flying winger Lelia Masaga who beat his man put Arnold into space to score his second.
Bay of Plenty's third try came after Waenga tore open the visitor's defence 40m from the Waikato line and was finished off by replacement forward John Pareanga.
Waikato scored their one and only try 10 minutes from the end after the side managed to string together 10 phases of play for lock Toby Lyn to touch down.
The Steamers bonus try came 7 minutes from time after they tried to clear the ball out of their 22 only to find the waiting arms of Arnold 5m inside his half. The Waikato defensive line appeared to part like the Red Sea for the Steamers fullback who returned the ball for a 30m gain before drawing in the last defender before passing to an ever hungry Taniela Moa to dot down and for Chris Noakes to convert.
Steamers coach Sean Horan said despite the team's great effort there were still parts of the game he wanted to focus on before their next match against Wellington at Bay Park on Sunday.
"I'm pretty pleased for the boys. We came up with a plan and they showed their commitment - and their enthusiasm and attitude was fantastic. Our hope and belief is that we're actually a very very good side and I think we showed that.
"In saying that probably our discipline let us down on a couple of occasions - our defence got breached a couple of times. It's like anything we can pick it apart, but overall we're very happy."
