At an assembly at Waihi College last week, student Te Huia Apaapa was presented with the MG Hall Cup in recognition of his outstanding achievement by an athlete with a disability.
Te Huia, 16, loves to represent his school and has a passion for both swimming and athletics. He alsois a part of the Waihi College Special Olympics Team and this year he competed at the Thames Valley Swimming and Athletic Events.
The Thames Valley 18 and Under AWD (Athlete with disability) 25 Metre Swimming Champion, is also the Thames Valley Senior Boy AWD Shot Put Champion.
The athlete then went on to compete at the Waikato BOP Secondary School Athletics Championships in March, where he placed first in the AWD Boys Long Jump.
And that's not all, for as a member of the Waikato/BOP team at the North Island Championships, he was part of the AWD Mixed 4x100 relay team that won gold.
In December, Te Huia will once again attend the New Zealand Secondary School Athletic Championships, this year being held in Dunedin. He has entered the long jump, 200m, 400m, and the 2km road race.
Sports & Activities co-ordinator Rachael Roycroft is pleased with her student's success.
"Te Huia is always a pleasure to take on any sporting excursion and has the support of his fellow students. We wish him all the success he deserves," she says.
