Otumoetai College chose to live or die by the three against Tauranga Boys' College at ASB Arena on Wednesday night.

The problem was, for the first half at least, their shooters could not throw the rock into the ocean if they were standing in it.

Otumoetai trailed 42-15 at the break after ceding the paint to a much larger Tauranga Boys' team featuring the twin towers of Jasper Wills and Zac Easthope.

The duo tormented Otumoetai's interior defence with post moves featuring finishing with both hands.

The game was essentially over before Otumoetai found a way around the full court press and began a concerted effort to drive the lane in the hope of putting the Tauranga Boys' bigs in foul trouble.

Easthope cut loose in the third and fourth quarters, scoring 27 points overall to go along with a number of eye-catching blocks, as point guard Caillan Rigby Hibbard pushed the ball at every opportunity.

Tauranga Boys' kicked away late to win 92-42, with Wills finishing with 22 points in a likely double-double for Tauranga Boys', which got a number of other impressive performances from a collection of guards and role players.

Earlier, the Aquinas College girls' team recovered from a slow start to beat Otumoetai College 64-45.

The sides were tied 14-14 after one quarter, with the Otumoetai team taking a narrow 27-26 lead into the break thanks mainly to a clear rebounding edge on both ends of the floor.

Aquinas ramped up their defensive pressure in the second half courtesy of a zone defence that confounded an opposition unsure how to properly attack the seams.

Like their male counterparts, the Otumoetai girls were content to launch from the outside, but when the shots stopped falling the game was essentially decided as a contest.

Cydney Ebeling did all she could for the losing side - pushing the ball well on the break, stroking outside jumpers and crossing over her defender with both hands - while Kelcy Ballantyne was strong on the inside.

Aquinas' Courtney Wilson, who travelled to compete in an Australian state competition with a New Zealand age group team earlier this year, had the biggest influence on proceedings. She finished with 20 points and exhibited a willingness to attack the paint with a succession of spin moves and well-judged floaters.
