There are close to 60 occupations which are facing an immediate shortage of skilled staff in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty at the moment, and construction is one of the industries affected.

Building consents for office blocks, retirement villages, apartments, factories and plenty of other projects have all been approved for Tauranga in the past year, which means the construction industry is experiencing a boom that's set to continue.

An example of a fast-growing company that operates in the industry is Waikato and BoP Suspended Ceilings Ltd. Started in August 1988 with only $2000, no vehicle and no idea of what lay ahead, the business has since become a major player in commercial interior construction in the region. In Tauranga and Hamilton, Waikato and BoP Suspended Ceilings Ltd employs more than 70 people.

Also known as the Good Buggers, these interior construction specialists have done some impressive work over the years, and because of this they have many more exciting projects in the pipeline. Contracts they have secured for next year include Jace Group pack house in Tauriko, which will be a 5 hectare building when finished, as well as University of Waikato's new Tauranga Campus and the new BOP Regional Council offices, both located in central Tauranga.

Commercial construction, in Tauranga especially, is not expected to slow down for at least 7 years and with their increasing workload, the Good Buggers are looking at hiring an additional 30 team members in the near future. They're looking to employ experienced ceiling installers, plasterers, plasterboard fixers and stoppers, office staff and other personnel.

"We are looking for skilled tradespeople who would like to be part of an awesome company culture. The most important requirement is that they are Good Buggers. We are big on honesty, timeliness, and family," says Waikato and Bop Suspended Ceiling Services Ltd director Daniel Pepperell.

"Earning a good income matters, and the Good Buggers offer that and more. You get paid on time, you get your holidays, a whole lot of other benefits. Best of all, you get to work with an awesome team delivering fully compliant fit-outs. Some of our staff members have been with us for more than 20 years, and that's because we treat them well," he says.

Waikato and BoP Suspended Ceiling Services Ltd are industry approved contractors who complete interior construction projects of all sizes. They are the Good Buggers, and they love what they do. No matter how big or small the project, they're proud of their work and don't shy away from going the extra mile.
