''I have just seen Prime Minister John Key on television say that there will be a two-stage referendum about replacing our national standard.
''The question to be asked in the first stage is: "Which alternative flag would you prefer?" I think that is the wrong question to ask.
''It should read: "Do you want an alternative to the existing flag?"
''Apparently the Government has already decided the answer to that question for us. It is an attitude that smacks of arrogance, something Mr Key cautiously advised us the Government would endeavour to avoid after its convincing win in the last election.''
