Readers share their views on minimum wage, the MMP system and alphas in a dog's world in today's Letters to the editor.

McLeod barks up right tree

"I was highly amused yesterday morning reading Rosemary McLeod's column about alphas in a dog's world (Opinion, October 26).
"It brought to mind the famous quip from Marie Corelli, best selling novelist in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, when she was asked why she had never married.
"Her amusing reply was, I quote: "I have never married because there was no need. I have three pets at home and they answer the same purpose as a husband. I have a dog that growls every morning, a parrot that swears all afternoon and a cat that comes home late at night, so what need do I have for a husband?"

MMP changes

"Perhaps the time has come to update some of the rules of MMP.
"For example, after the voting results are confirmed, it should be up to the party with the largest majority to have the legal initiative to seek a coalition partner. And if agreement cannot be reached, then the party with the next highest vote would likewise be given the initiative.
"This seems infinitely better than allow the tail to wag the dog."

Capital result

"I have to laugh at these pathetic capitalists crying about the increase in the minimum wage being too much.
"The Employer and Manufacturers Association (EMA) say it's too much and jobs will be lost and the economy will grind to a halt.
"Yeah, yeah, we've heard it all before. The truth is that if a company can't afford a couple of dollars' increase for their workers, then they are a very poorly-run company and should maybe look at the wage of the chief executive, which is probably about 20 times larger than their workers.
"We have had years of wage abuse by bad companies and very weak unions, time for change.
"Sorry Bill, but your capitalists lost the election by 56-44."
