A young girl has drowned at Lake Rotokawau in Rotorua.

A police media spokeswoman said police were alerted to the incident at around 4:35pm yesterday.

Her death will be referred to the Coroner.

Meanwhile a child is in a critical condition after a water incident in the Coromandel, St John ambulance reported.

St John said two ambulances and a rescue helicopter were sent to the scene in Miranda just after 8pm yesterday.

A police spokeswoman told the Herald emergency services were called to the Miranda Holiday Park just after 8pm.

The injured child was subsquently taken to Starship children's hospital in a serious condition, police said.
