The new ramp would be larger in height, length and width, creating a safer curve to skate on than the previous ramp, he said.
"It was an old '80s-style ramp. It was harder to use because it was so small and tight.
"Because the [new] curve's a lot bigger, it gives you more time and room to do your tricks."
He said the location in Mount Maunganui was great and imagined the new world-class ramp would draw skaters from all over New Zealand.
Mount Maunganui skate store The Good Room donated a mini ramp for the same location for beginners to learn on, which Mr Tolley thought would get new people involved.
"If you haven't skated on the vert [vertical] ramp before it can be quite daunting the first time."
Mr Tolley said there was a community of skaters in Mount Maunganui who were all looking forward to having the new ramp in time for summer.
The ramp is set to be completed by the end of November.
