The NZ Cricket Women's Roadshow rolled through the Western Bay of Plenty yesterday, allowing young girls the opportunity to mix it with first class talent. Students from Greenpark School, Papamoa Primary, Gate Pa School and Katikati Intermediate took turns hosting Northern Spirit players Kerry Tomlinson, Felicity Leydon-Davis and Jacinta Coleman, who ran drills intended to encourage sound technique and foster an enjoyment for the game.
Leydon-Davis, also a member of the White Ferns, said the programme was picking up momentum in just its second year. "This is the GoGirl cricket programme that started last season for ND cricket and this is part of the White Ferns Roadshow as well," said Leydon-Davis, who is also in the national team set-up.
"The numbers is a big thing. We are struggling a little bit for numbers in girls cricket around the country, but we are getting to more than 100 girls in a school per week with the programme. We are already noticing the lift in numbers in Hamilton especially."
The sessions included opportunities for signatures and photos and with festival days planned throughout the association in the coming weeks young female cricketers have plenty to look forward to.
