The woman who sufferred serious burns in a Whakatane incident yesterday has been transferred to the burns unit at Waikato Hospital today.

The 58-year-old was first taken to Whakatane Hospital in a critical condition, with burns on her upper body and face.

"The patient was transferred to Waikato Hospital - specialist burns - at around 1am this morning," said a spokesman for the Bay of Plenty District Health Board.

A man was arrested yesterday after the woman was found with serious burns and was fighting for her life.

It's unclear how the woman received the burns, but police are making enquiries and have taken a man into custody at a property on Tuhoe Ave, Whakatane.

The woman, who police say has burns to her face and upper body, was taken to Whakatane Hospital in a critical condition.

Police say they're not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident.

Emergency services were called to the scene about 5.20pm.
