A woman who was shot at a Tauranga home on Friday night remains in Tauranga Hospital.

A police spokeswoman said enquiries were continuing into the shooting which happened at a Christopher Street property.

"A firearm was discharged into a garage at the address, injuring a 27-year-old woman. She is recovering well," the spokeswoman said.

Neighbours reported hearing screams and a baby crying after a gunshot about 6.30pm on Friday.

A man said they could hear lots of people yelling and screaming, including a woman who he heard say, "look what you have done".

The next thing they heard was a car driving off quickly before the police arrived.

Another man who lived in the street said there had been an altercation at the house, the
woman was injured and not long after, sirens were heard as police began to arrive.

A scene examination was carried out by police on Saturday and police are urging anyone with information about the incident to call Tauranga Police on (07) 577 4300.
