AN elderly woman died this morning after she was struck by a car while crossing a pedestrian crossing on a mobility scooter at the weekend.
The accident occurred in Waihi about 6pm on Saturday, just seconds after the female driver of the car pulled out of the exit
at Super Liquor, on to Rosemont Rd.
Waihi Sergeant Steve Hindmarsh estimated the pedestrian crossing was about 50m from the liquor store driveway.
The 89-year-old Waihi woman was flown to Waikato Hospital by the Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance with suspected arm, head and pelvic fractures.
The driver of the car - also from Waihi - had two children in the back of the vehicle. All three occupants were uninjured.
Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, police said.
However, Mr Hindmarsh said it was unclear at this stage what speed the car had been travelling. The speed limit on Rosemont Rd is 50kmh.
He was also unable to say whether the woman had stopped the mobility scooter prior to driving on to the crossing. The road was dry at the time.
Air ambulance pilot Simon Lewis landed the helicopter in a nearby oval with the assistance of members of the fire service before making the 20-minute flight to the hospital.
Mr Hindmarsh said the serious crash unit from Hamilton was investigating. It was too early to say if charges would be laid.
