Turns out Waikato isn't all bad. I never thought I'd say it, who am I anymore?! This year The Hits 95FM were lucky enough to be awarded the media sponsorship of the Kia Waikato/BOP Magic netball team.

One of the perks for me is getting to go to the game, when it's at ASB Arena and MC all of the entertainment. What a brilliant effort we put in as a region, supporting a winning team!

Last Monday they played the bottom of the table Mainland Tactix and we smashed them. Needless to say those women are awesome at what they do. As I sat there watching, I tried to imagine what it would be like if I was on the court. One of two things would happen-either I would be terrible, not touch the ball once and get dragged off (throwing up a lung) after three minutes, or I would get barged out of the way, get aggressive, swear at the ref and trip a player, walk off myself shouting obscenities and crowing about how the game was unfair. Yup, sore loser.

Whoever said netball was a non-contact sport was blatantly lying by the way! But the game was only part of the fun. There was a mascot there from another sponsor, Mother Earth. That mascot as a human sized squirrel named Basil McNutz. If it's not hard enough being in a full body animal suit, this guy took it to the next level. During the half-time entertainment he dropped dance moves that Michael Jackson would've been proud of. The squirrel moon-walked up a storm and gave the dance group a run for their money. If you've ever wanted to see a squirrel run a clinic in hiphop/soulful/sensual dance, you need to get you're unco-ordinated butt to a Kia Magic game ASAP!

There was as hoot for cash game and also The Hits 'Panic Room' made a comeback. Dollar amounts are read out, increasing in value, you say stop when you win the last amount read out. Wait too long and the panic alarm goes off and you get nothing. The lady and her step-daughter who played won more than $450. When asked what she reckoned Mum would do with the money, the 11 year old stepdaughter said, very matter-of-factly, 'she'll be taking me to the mall'. Your money is never your own when you have kids huh?

We were less than 100 tickets away from selling out. A round robin netball game, that was not an international almost sold out?! Yup, we should be proud of how we support netball in the Bay.

It starts at the purple-legged, freezing kids on a blustery/rainy Saturday. Well, it starts at their parents, then them. With our sponsorship, we wanted to prove to the 'powers that be' that the Bay supports netball better than most regions.

We've done that, well done! Next target? More games here next season as we only had two this season. Does it make me a bad Bay of Plentian if I hope the Magic lose a game and don't get to the top final? If they do, then we might get a preliminary final here in the Bay. If the preliminary final sells out, we'll surely get more games here next year.

We chant with the best of them, our kids deafen with those blow-up clappy-sticks like professionals, we understand the game intimately and we have a coastline! All things Hamilton doesn't have (in my opinion). I knew my like for Waikato wouldn't last long!
