Hello 2015 you! Let's not talk about your hangover, or those things you did last night... Or those regrets that you'd promised yourself you wouldn't have! Let's focus on the good that currently surrounds us. Like people who know how to 'do stuff good'.
Isn't that great English! Turns outmy old High School English teacher wasn't actually a qualified teacher and made some poor choices with a work laptop, which ended his career. Don't worry yourself, I still got A's in English. I just choose to ignore the correct way. Digression over.
Back to the do stuff gooders. When was the last time you stopped somewhere and thought what must actually be involved to make that happen? Copenhagen Cones at the Mt is a great example of showing you how it happens. With that waffle cone making thingy (yes, that is the technical term for it) in plain sight and the sucky job for the person who has to sit at it in the Summer sun and make them.
Our Hits Beach Bach (shipping container house) is a product of the do stuff good people of this region. Firstly, if someone told you you need to get that shipping container off that truck and put it exactly there, with that crane attached to the truck, you'd stuff it up really badly. The guy who drove the truck didn't though, he stayed longer than needed to make sure it was all level and secure. He did it all with a smile, after 5.30pm.
Then the internet dude from EOL (Exceptional On-to-it Legends) installed the internet we've needed to broadcast from down there this Summer. He was there from 5-7pm, we chatted the whole time and shared filthy jokes. I have the technological prowess of a drunk cat. Yup, no opposable thumbs, no attention span and a love for shiny things/laser lights. But he made it work in my brain.
When I do a show from the Beach Bach there is an 18 year old sitting back in the studio in Harrington House making sure it all goes on the radio and playing music under the talking and freaking out if stuff goes wrong. He came in on his own time in the week leading up to the broadcast, to just learn all he could and hang out. Seriously, that doesn't happen often in Auckland. It does here.
Next time you get that beer/wine/jug in a bar in the bay this Summer... who delivered it? How long is the bar person working that night? Who cleaned the glass you're drinking it out of? All locals, making this place work, earning a buck. New Year, same awesome people making this place the best place to be all Summer!
