State Highway 25 has reopened following a house fire in Whangamatā this morning that saw six people taken to hospital.

Emergency services were called to the fire at a Tairua Rd property shortly before 5am.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said in a 12.15pm update the highway was open.

The highway was earlier closed between Brenton Place and Smartway Sewage because of the fire on Tairua Rd, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said.

A detour via Port and Heatherington Rds and Harry Watt Drive had been in place.

A Hato Hone St John spokesperson told RNZ one ambulance was sent and six people were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand were alerted to the fire at 4.45am and sent 12 crews.

“The fire was well involved when we arrived and went to a third alarm level,” a spokesperson said.
