Whales spotted off Papamoa coast

A few people were lucky enough to spot a southern right whale enjoying the Bay waters off Papamoa shore yesterday.

A caller to the Bay of Plenty Times said he had seen a whale about 20m off Papamoa Beach near Motiti Island.

He estimated the whale was up to nine metres long and was travelling towards Mount Maunganui at walking speed.

Bay of Plenty Times columnist Richard Moore also snapped some pics of the pod of whales off Papamoa East and Maketu this morning.

Mr Moore said there were "four or five of the critters" between 10 and 15m long.

"He was enjoying a leisurely swim down the beach towards his mates who were playing near Maketu."

Department of Conservation ranger Pete Huggins, said they have been monitoring reports of the animal since late last week, and that it has travelled from colder waters in the south.

"It is quite normal to see these animals close to the shore like this, as they follow traditional migration routes," said Mr Huggins.
