People fond of a trip down memory lane can revel in nostalgic memories with the return of the Greerton Village Vintage & Retro Fayre. The community event returns to Greerton tomorrow and Chadwick Rd will be closed. Vintage and classic cars from local clubs will be on display on the street while local band Cleverwood will play live from the rotunda.

Many of Greerton's vintage stores will set up stalls at Greerton Village School to offer a market vibe and high tea will also be on offer.

Greerton Village Community Association manager Sally Benning said high tea was one of the event's most popular features.

"There are already a few bookings. It's part of a bygone era," Benning said.

The vintage and retro cars were also a highlight last time and this year the collection will include the famous red Mini driven by New Zealand's only Formula One championship winner and local legend Denny Hulme.

Benning said people were welcome to join the display with their vehicles if they wanted, as long as they were on Chadwick St between Cameron Rd and Fraser St between 8am and 9am.

A best-dressed competition will also be held and people are invited to enjoy a dance or two by the rotunda to the 1960s and 1970s covers being played. Street performers and roving entertainers would also be part of the day's activities.

"There are a couple of different things but much of the programme is the same. It's a celebration of all things vintage and retro," Benning said.

"The big change this year is we are running a competition where anyone who shops at 23 of our stores on the day of the fayre is in for a trip to the Gold Coast. So there won't be thousands and thousands of entries because it will only be among those who shop that morning."

Benning said she hoped the event would be held annually. Last year's event was originally meant to be held in March but was cancelled because of a cyclone. It was held in November instead.

Anyone keen on high tea in Greerton is encouraged to book ahead by contacting the Greerton Village office.
