Warning of 'significant delays' on Mount Maunganui's Hewletts Rd after truck crash

Motorists are being asked to avoid State Highway 2 at Mount Maunganui after a truck rolled today.

Lanes to westbound traffic on Hewlett's Rd were closed off to motorists as contractors worked to right the overturned truck, which crashed near Jean Batten Drive about 7.30am.

A bystander said it appeared the truck hit a sign and people coned the area off shortly later.

The New Zealand Transport Agency said in a statement the highway was now reopened but motorists could expect significant delays and asked all road users to avoid the area.

The agency suggested motorists use SH29a past Baypark Stadium while the truck was being removed.
