Part of the Waikareao Estuary has been forced to close after the boardwalk was set on fire at the weekend.

A Tauranga City Council spokeswoman said the boardwalk on the Judea side of the estuary was set alight on Sunday. The time of the incident remained unknown.

The spokeswoman expected the repair work to take an entire day on Wednesday to fix the damage to the boardwalk.

"So that section of the boardwalk will unfortunately need to be closed," she said.

The cost of the damage was not yet known.
