Forget handsome princes and dainty princesses, Out of the Woods is a fable out of left field.

Waihi Drama Society youth division have been working hard on a classic fairytale-inspired pantomime they have written themselves and will bring to Boyd Rd Theatre on December 11-12.

Their mythical saga features a mishmash of favorite characters who have more depth than the usual Disney players — and it's a lot of fun too.

The pantomime stars a cast of nine students from Waihi and surrounding areas. Lily Crowley, 15, from Katikati describes the play as a fun, all ages show which young children will love.

There are themes throughout such as good versus evil, making connections with others and anti-heroes.

''Everyone in the play wants something and there is a lot of villainous characters who turn into heroes,'' Lily says. ''We have made the characters more complex, they have more depth with morals and beliefs. Good wins over evil and we show that there's good in everyone.''

Characters include the Evil Queen, Snow White and her cruel sister Storm, The Big Bad Wolf, Little Red Riding Hood and mischievous dwarfs.

Lily says they have mixed ''21st century humour with the magical wonder of the fairytale universe''.
