A dairy in Waihi was robbed today by a man wielding a pistol.

At 12.50pm a man entered the Maybelle Superette on Kensington Ave in Waihi, armed with what appeared to be a pistol, and forced the shop keepers to lie down on the floor of the shop, police said in a statement.

The man, described as Maori or Polynesian of solid build, wearing a hat and scarf over his mouth, took money and cigarettes

Police said the man was in the dairy for a reasonable amount of time before presenting the pistol.

No one was injured in the robbery and the man left on foot, down Parry Palm Avenue in the direction of Paeroa.

Police are wanting to speak to anyone who may have seen the robbery at the dairy or may have seen this man the vicinity of the dairy.

Police are appealing to any witnesses who may have entered the dairy before or after this robbery also.
