The countdown to the 2014 General Election has begun with every registered voter in the country sent an enrolment update pack this week, including 48,842 in the Tauranga electorate.

Tauranga Electoral Office registrar Lesley Christophers said another 48,453 had been sent out to registered voters in the Bay of Plenty electorate.

There is now only 85 days until the September 20 election. As at May 31, 97.2 per cent of the 50,250 estimated eligible voters were enrolled in Tauranga and 95.44 per cent of the estimated 50,770 population in the Bay of Plenty.

The Tauranga electoral office was a hive of activity when the Bay of Plenty Times visited yesterday, with Ms Christophers and her team busy sorting out the returned enrolment forms.

She said it was important people checked their forms and send them back promptly if there were any corrections.

"If people have not received their enrolment update pack then they are not enrolled to vote."

If anyone has forgotten to update their details and no longer have their update form see www.elections.org.nz.

Voters who will be away on election day or who cannot get to a voting place can vote in advance from September 3.
