Police can now confirm one person has died following a crash on Tairua Rd in the Coromandel.

The single-vehicle crash happened south of Pukepoto around 12:30pm on State Highway 25.

A second person was taken to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition according to a written statement from police.

The road will remain closed until around 11pm.

Diversions are in place but motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Previously the Bay of Plenty Times reported the single-vehicle crash happened south of Pukepoto around 12.30pm, according to a written statement from police.

Indications are that there are serious to critical injuries.

A helicopter is at the scene.

The road is closed as the Serious Crash Unit attends.

Diversions are in place.
