A tractor rolled on a Welcome Bay property injuring the driver this morning. Photo/John Borren

UPDATED 9.01am: A man has been taken to Tauranga Hospital in a serious condition after a tractor rolled on top of him this morning.

The 70-year-old man suffered injuries to his ribs and head after a tractor rolled on Welcome Bay Rd property.

Emergency services were called to the scene about 7.45am.

A rescue helicopter was initially called also but stood down.

Sergeant Iain Chapman said police were called to help St John ambulance staff carry the man out on a stretcher.

The man was now being taken to hospital in a serious condition, Mr Chapman said.

EARLIER: Emergency services are responding to a report of a man seriously injured after a tractor rolled on top of him.

The incident was reported to police about 7.45am.

The 70-year-old man is understood to have suffered seriously head injuries in the incident, which happened on a Welcome Bay property.
